# Search Console Doesn't Show ChatGPT Traffic: Where to Find It URL: https://hacktheseo.com/search-console-chatgpt-traffic/ Date: 2026-09-30 Last modified: 2026-09-30 Author: Eric Ibanez --- > Search Console only counts Google: ChatGPT visits never show up there. How to find them in GA4, what they're worth, and why the count is a floor. Search Console doesn’t show ChatGPT traffic. On the WordPress site of one of our clients, an insurance broker, ChatGPT sent **at least 15 visits** in a month. In its Search Console: **155 clicks from Google over 3 months, and not a single one from ChatGPT**. It isn’t a bug. Search Console only counts searches made on Google: a visit sent by ChatGPT will never show up there, whichever report you open. Here is where to find those visits, what they are worth, and why the number you see is always a minimum. #### Key takeaways - **15 ChatGPT visits, 0 in Search Console.** Same site: 15 ChatGPT visits from Aug 29 to Sep 25, 2026, none in Search Console whatever the date range. It only measures Google. - **Search Console’s AI report only covers Google.** It shows impressions in Google’s AI Overviews (610 in 3 months on this site), never ChatGPT or Perplexity. - **Google Analytics 4 does see them**: Traffic acquisition › Session source/medium › chatgpt.com / ai-assistant. 13 sessions out of 174 that month, or 7%. - **Traffic that converts.** On this site, ChatGPT produced 6 key events from 13 sessions; Google organic, 10 from 76. About 3.5 times more per session, on a small sample. - **15 is a floor.** Some AI-referred visits arrive with no signature: neither Google Analytics nor any plugin can recognise them. The live demo (3 min 23, in French): a click from ChatGPT tracked in real time, 15 visits missing from Search Console, and where to find them in Google Analytics. ## Why doesn’t Search Console show ChatGPT visits? Because Search Console is Google’s tool for its own search engine. It counts how often a page appears in Google results (impressions) and the clicks made from those results. Someone who asks ChatGPT a question and clicks a link in the answer never goes through Google: there is nothing for Search Console to count. In the video, we check it live. We ask ChatGPT for the address of our WordPress plugin, click the link it gives, and the visit shows up instantly in Google Analytics with ChatGPT as the source. It will never appear in Search Console. Search Console shows no ChatGPT traffic On our client’s site the result is clear: **155 Google clicks in 3 months in Search Console, 15 ChatGPT visits in one month recorded by the plugin, and no trace of those 15 anywhere in Search Console**. ## What does Search Console’s AI report actually count? Search Console does have a section about generative AI. But it only measures **Google’s AI Overviews**, the generated answers at the top of Google results, and it mostly counts impressions: each time one of your pages is shown in an AI Overview. On our client’s site, that report shows **610 impressions in 3 months**, 149 of them for a single page. Useful to know whether Google cites you. But ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude are not in it, and neither are their clicks. Search Console AI report: Google AI Overviews only ## How do you find ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4? Google Analytics 4 counts visits made in a browser, whatever their origin. When ChatGPT passes on where the visitor came from, the visit is filed under its name. To find it: - Open Google Analytics 4 and go to **Reports › Acquisition › Traffic acquisition**. - Choose the **Session source/medium** dimension. - Look for chatgpt.com / ai-assistant. Type “chatgpt” in the table search to get there faster. - Check the **Key events** column to see whether these visitors do what you want them to do: contact request, booking, purchase. ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4 On our client’s site, Google Analytics shows **13 ChatGPT sessions out of 174** over 28 days (Aug 31 → Sep 27), 7% of traffic. The plugin counted 15 over the same period. A small gap is normal: the two tools don’t count the same way (a declined cookie banner, for instance, hides a visit from Google Analytics). ## Does ChatGPT traffic convert? On this site, yes, clearly. The 13 ChatGPT sessions produced **6 key events**. Google organic traffic produced **10 from 76 sessions**. Per session, ChatGPT converts about **3.5 times more** than Google. Our reading: someone arriving from ChatGPT has already asked their question, read an answer and chosen to click your page. They are further along than a searcher comparing ten results. **Handle with care:** one site, one month, 13 sessions. It shows a trend worth watching, not a rule. Run the same calculation on your own site before drawing conclusions. ## Why is your ChatGPT visit count always a minimum? ** “What nobody tells you is that some of these visits arrive without saying where they come from. Those 15 visits are a floor, not the total.”— Eric Ibanez, founder of Hack The SEO To recognise an AI-referred visit, a tool looks at where the visitor came from: the referring address the browser passes on, or a tag added to the link. When a visit arrives without that information, it carries no signature: no analytics tool or plugin can tell it came from ChatGPT. That happens, for example, when someone copies the address ChatGPT gave and pastes it into a new tab, or when an app opens the link without passing on its origin. Those visits end up as “direct”. So our client’s 15 visits are a minimum**. The real total is higher, and nobody can say by how much. ## Do ChatGPT’s crawlers send you visitors? Not necessarily. On the same site and period, ChatGPT’s crawlers came **684 times** to read pages. For 15 visits, that is **about 1 visit per 45 reads**. Meta’s crawlers came 1,513 times, for 0 visits. In total, AI crawlers came about 3,500 times. A crawler visit is not a citation: a bot reading your page doesn’t prove an AI recommends you. But a bot that never comes can’t. To see who reads your pages, read our guide to [AI crawlers on WordPress](https://hacktheseo.com/ai-crawlers-wordpress/). ## How do you track AI traffic on a WordPress site? You need two complementary tools: - **Google Analytics 4** for visits and conversions, using the path above. - **A server-side plugin** to see the AI crawlers reading your pages (Google Analytics can’t see them) and the visits they send, page by page. That is what the Hack The SEO plugin does, including its free version on the WordPress directory. Hack The SEO plugin: 16 AI-referred visits, 15 from ChatGPT See what the [Hack The SEO WordPress plugin](https://hacktheseo.com/wordpress-seo-plugin/) does with this data. **Try this tonight:** open Google Analytics, go to Acquisition › Traffic acquisition and search for “chatgpt”. If a row shows up, ChatGPT already sends you visitors, and Search Console will never show them. ## Frequently asked questions ### Does Search Console show ChatGPT traffic? No. Search Console only measures Google Search. A visit sent by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude does not appear in any of its reports. ### Does Search Console’s generative AI report include ChatGPT? No. It only covers Google’s AI Overviews, and mostly counts impressions. ChatGPT is not in it. ### Where is ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4? In Reports › Acquisition › Traffic acquisition, Session source/medium dimension: look for “chatgpt.com / ai-assistant”. ### Why don’t Google Analytics and my plugin show the same number? They count differently. Google Analytics depends on a script and on accepted cookies; a server-side tool sees the visit even when the script doesn’t run. A small gap is normal. ### Are all ChatGPT visits counted? No. A visit that arrives without a referrer or a tag can’t be recognised by any tool. The number you see is a minimum. ### Are ChatGPT crawlers and ChatGPT visits the same thing? No. A crawler reads your pages on ChatGPT’s behalf; a visit is a person clicking your link in an answer. On our client’s site: 684 crawler reads for 15 visits. ## Further reading - [AI crawlers on WordPress: who really reads your site?](https://hacktheseo.com/ai-crawlers-wordpress/) - [WordPress SEO plugin: AI that actually automates SEO](https://hacktheseo.com/wordpress-seo-plugin/) - [WordPress SEO audit with one-click fixes](https://hacktheseo.com/seo-audit-wordpress/) **Want to see what AI does on your site?** We open your WordPress site together and show you, live, the crawlers reading it and the visits they send: [book a free 20-minute demo](https://hacktheseo.com/book-a-demo/).
